Rev. Roderick J. Josey is a native of Wilmington, North Carolina, and the youngest of two children born to Broderick Josey and Ann Dingle Josey. He is a graduate of North Brunswick High School and continued his education at Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with a minor in Religious Studies in 2015.
During his senior year at Livingstone College, Rev. Josey served as an intern in the Office of Student Activities, where he helped enhance campus life by launching the institution's first Homecoming Carnival and reestablishing the beloved Bear Fest, providing students with opportunities to showcase their talents and creativity.
Following graduation, Rev. Josey enrolled at Bowie State University, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in Organizational Communications in May 2020. He later attended the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at Virginia Union University, graduating in May 2023 with the Master of Divinity degree. He is currently pursuing the Doctor of Ministry degree at United Theological Seminary.
Rev. Josey answered God's call to ministry at an early age under the leadership of Rev. Dr. George W. Maize IV. He preached his trial sermon in 2010 at the age of eighteen at Warner Temple A.M.E. Zion Church in Wilmington, North Carolina, under the pastorate of Rev. Dr. Clifford Barnett, Sr.
An ordained Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Rev. Josey was ordained a Deacon in 2020 and an Elder in 2022 by Bishop W. Darin Moore. He has faithfully served the denomination in various leadership capacities, including as Vice Chairperson of the Eastern Region Young Adult Christian Ministry (YACM).
Professionally, Rev. Josey serves as a Student Advocate with Prince George's County Public Schools in Maryland, where he works to support student success, school culture, and positive behavioral outcomes. His educational background and experience in student development have fueled his passion for youth advocacy, mentoring, and community engagement.
In addition to his educational work, Rev. Josey serves as Director of Communications for the Mid-Atlantic Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Zion Church and as Educational Editor for *The Star of Zion*, the official publication of the denomination.
On May 26, 2024, during the 195th Session of the Philadelphia and Baltimore Annual Conference, Rev. Josey received his first pastoral appointment to Mt. Tabor A.M.E. Zion Church in Avondale, Pennsylvania. Under his leadership, the church has experienced renewed growth and vision, including expanded community engagement, enhanced worship and sound technology, strengthened digital ministry through live streaming, the development of a church website and social media presence, and critical facility improvements.
Rev. Josey is passionate about ministry, education, community partnerships, and developing the next generation of leaders. He believes strongly in building bridges between the church and community while creating opportunities for spiritual, educational, and personal growth. Above all, he is committed to serving God's people and faithfully carrying out the work to which God has called him.
His favorite scripture remains Philippians 4:13 (NKJV): *"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."*
